Our oyster restoration team collects oyster mats made by volunteers throughout the year. During the summer months, these mats are deployed across Mosquito Lagoon in prepared restoration areas with guidance from the University of Central Florida’s Dr. Linda Walters, boat support from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission and IRL National Estuary Program, and the hard work of many dedicated volunteers. Summer is the perfect time of year for this activity, because it’s during oyster spawning season but before barnacle season, giving young oysters enough time to find restored reefs and settle before barnacles appear to compete with them. And once summer draws to a close, completed restoration sites are frequently monitored throughout the year and for years to come.
The 2016 oyster mat deployment season in Mosquito Lagoon has concluded. However, the Oyster Team still needs your help to build the final reef of the summer in Brevard County. To register, please visit the volunteer page.
